"Look everybody, I found a big one!" Chippy squealed excitedly, rolling a large acorn through the leaves. He was trying his best to find more acorns than his sister Hazel. Chippy, always in a big hurry, pushed the acorn so fast it went past the pile and down the hill it rolled, bumping over rocks and roots as Chippy scrambled to stop it.
Splash! It landed in the lake and sploosh…
… so did Chippy!

Bonk! The pine cone landed right on Chippy's head. He fell down and lay very still.

Everyone sat at the table as Doc Hooter examined Chippy's eyes.
“What happened to Chippy?” asked Mr. Scurry.
Doc Hooter told the story of Chippy's accident. When he finished, Mrs. Scurry looked at Chippy with tears in her eyes. Everyone was very quiet.
"Can we eat now? I'm really hungry!" exclaimed Chippy, breaking the silence.
"Well, it seems as though Chippy still has a healthy appetite.” proclaimed Doc Hooter. The whole family chuckled and smiled.

After a few weeks indoors, Chippy began to feel quite restless. It was time for him to face another challenge, the out of doors.
All of Chippy’s family and friends did their best to help Chippy learn his way around Critter Creek Hollow again. He figured out where all the trees were by counting his steps and feeling for roots. Each day he would venture a little farther from the burrow. It took a lot of practice as he mastered getting to his favorite places and back home safely.
Chippy was so good at using his other senses that he soon was the winner of the Hide-and-Seek games in the hollow.

Chippy was thinking to himself how difficult it was to smell and hear in the strong winds but he could still feel the ground change under his feet.
When they reached the edge of Rustic Woods a strong gust of wind blew out the lantern. Suddenly Mr. Scurry was as blind as Chippy.
"We've got a problem." his father said. "The wind blew out our lantern. We’d better go back home and light the lantern so we can continue our search.”
Chippy thought to himself “Gee, I don’t need a lantern, I know where we are. If we go back now the storm will be too strong to find her. I could lead the way!”
